If you are teased being overweight, then here is the reply; Health benefits of overweight

Are you tired of losing your weight?  Though there are many risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, and coronary heart disease related to overweight, never mind overweight do have health benefits too. It is not bad at all, next time if someone teases you being overweight please do share some of the ideas you will know after reading this article.

Firstly, we should know about BMI (Body Mass Index), it is defined as the body weight (kg) divided by the square of the body height (m). Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.

A study in The Journal of the American Medical Association and also from  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  recently found that while being overweight i.e BMI 25-30, these lower the risk of dying from any cause by about 6 percent than the person who having normal weight. They concluded these finding after examining nearly three million adults.

When you’re sick, your body may require more energy to heal properly. To some extent, extra fat can provide a crucial boost so you can bounce back faster. Fat tissue as well as the hormones releases and improves bodily defense mechanisms by supplying energy reserves and anti-inflammatory agents. Thus, even though overweight people are more likely to develop serious health issues, but normal and underweight people are much more likely to die if they get same disease.

What’s more, overweight people generally receive better medical care. According to a study in The American Journal of Cardiology, when caring for heavier patients, doctors appear to be much more aggressive and proactive in their treatment.

Moreover, some of the recent studies are highlighting the beneficial effects of overweight like

  • It decrease the rate of developing dementia.
  • Reduced the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, where metabolic pathways related to the adipose tissue create a protective barrier against the onset of the condition.
  • Protect important organs in the event of attacks or accidents.
  • Less likely to develop common cold by boosting immune system.

If overweight or mildly obese individuals able to maintain normal blood glucose levels, lipid profiles and blood pressure, then they are extremly healthy than lean individuals who are unfit or metabolically unhealthy. So, while preventing more severe obesity is indeed a necessary goal, the vital takeaway from the latest scientific literature is: Fitness is more important than fatness for long-term health.
